Aikenhead Centre for Medical Discovery (ACMD)  ·  Fitzroy, Melbourne

A new (opened 2025) A$206M collaborative biomedical engineering research translation centre, located at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne. Partners include The University of Melbourne, Swinburne University of Technology, St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, and two medical research institutes. Provides the ‘FabHub’ mock medtech manufacturing cleanroom for hands-on GMP training and offers an ecosystem for innovation and industry engagement. Central to the [MB]² winter school on translational research.

CSIRO – Biotherapeutics Program  ·  Clayton, Melbourne

Australia’s national science research agency. The CSIRO Biotherapeutics Program brings extensive expertise in translating biomedical materials and processes from discovery to commercial applications, with regulated facilities, Lab 22 additive manufacturing centre, and a national vaccine and therapeutics laboratory. Internationally recognised for collagen-based biomedical materials. Veronica Glattauer (CSIRO) is a co-supervisor in Project 10.

Melbourne Centre for Nanofabrication (MCN)  ·  Clayton, Melbourne

A world-class, ISO9001-certified nanofabrication centre and Victorian node of the Australian National Fabrication Facility (ANFF). Offers open-access multi-scale fabrication infrastructure for medical technologies and biomaterials, including lithography, nanofibre production, thin film coatings, and microceramics. Prof. Dr. Nico Voelcker (MOU/MCN) is a PI in Project 5.

Victorian Medtech Skills and Devices Hub (VMH)  ·  Carlton, Melbourne

A State Government-funded initiative led by Prof. O’Connor, bringing together The University of Melbourne, Swinburne University of Technology, and ACMD. Delivers targeted training programmes in medtech education, career pathways, and industry connections. Central to industry exposure in the [MB]² qualification programme.

A research-intensive university with the Institute for Frontier Materials (IFM) as one of its flagship research centres. IFM’s strengths include polymers, composites, nanomaterials, biomaterials, and sustainable materials. Complements [MB]² expertise in advanced materials characterisation and manufacturing.
